Perissodactyl Mammals
Perissodactyls are odd-toed ungulates (hoofed mammals). This order of mammals consists mostly of fast runners that have a reduced number of toes. These animals carry their weight mainly on the middle toe of each foot. Perissodactyls are herbivores (plant-eaters) who have cheek teeth used for chewing plant material. (Even-toed ungulates are artiodactyls.)

The word perissodactyl comes from the Greek language, and means "odd-number finger or toe."

Perissodactyls are divided into 2 suborders, 3 families, and about 15 species, including:

BALUCHITHERIUM

Baluchitherium (aka Indricotherium) was a large, extinct, hornless rhinoceros. It was one of the largest land mammals.


DONKEY

Donkeys are hoofed mammals adapted to desert life.

Elasmotherium

Elasmotherium was a rhinoceros-like mammal that lived in the steppes of Eurasia during the Pleistocene.


EOHIPPUS

Eohippus was a tiny horse that lived 50 million years ago.


HORSE

Horses are very fast runners. Primitive horses were very small.

Hyracotherium/Eohippus was a tiny horse that lived 50 million years ago.

INDRICOTHERIUM

Indricotherium (aka Baluchitherium) was a large, extinct, hornless rhinoceros. It was one of the largest land mammals.


QUAGGA

The Quagga is a recently-extinct relative of the zebra.


RHINOCEROS

A rhinoceros is a huge animal from Africa that has one or two horn-like spikes on its head.


TAPIR

A plant-eating, hoofed mammal with a small trunk.


WOOLLY RHINOCEROS

The Woolly Rhino is an extinct rhinoceros from the Ice Ages.

Zebras have black and white stripes.
