T. rex had a Great Sense of Smell
Large Olfactory Area Found in Sue's Brain
May 26,1999

Chris Brochu, a paleontologist from Chicago's Field Museum has discovered that "Sue," the largest and most complete T-Rex skeleton ever found, had grapefruit-sized olfactory bulbs. Using CT scans, scientists made three dimensional images of the inside of this T. rex's skull. Its brain was one foot (0.3 m) long, large compared to other dinosaurs. It also had acute senses of sight and hearing, but the sense of smell was especially well developed.

T. rexHow this acute sense of smell changes what scientists think of T. rex's hunting style hasn't been determined yet. Most paleontologists think that T. rex was a fierce and able hunter; a few others think T. rex was primarily a scavenger.

"Sue" was named for her discoverer, amateur fossil hunter Sue Hendrickson. Hendrickson found this impressive fossils in 1990 in a bluff in the South Dakota Badlands, near the town of Faith.
T. rex skullThe Field Museum bought "Sue," a 45-foot-long (13.7-meter-long) at auction in 1997 for $8.4 million. This T-rex dates from 67 million years ago, during the late Cretaceous period. T. rex (and the other remaining dinosaurs) went extinct 2 million years later during the enormous K-T extinction.
