Crux, also known as the Southern Cross, is a cross-shaped constellation in the far Southern Hemisphere. Crux has been used for navigation purposes, helping travelers determine which way is south. Connect the dots and find the cross.

The brightest stars in Crux are Acrux (alpha Cru) and Mimosa (beta Cru). Note: The two pointer stars are not part of the constellation Crux (they are in Centaurus), but they are used to help find Crux in the night sky. Crux is surrounded by the constellation Centaurus on three sides.

Crux is pictured on many world flags, including those of Australia, Brazil, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, and Samoa.

Throughout history, people have given names to groups of stars in the sky. A constellation is a group of stars that we see in the sky. These stars are not necessarily located together in space, but they look as though they are a group when seen from Earth. See if you can find these stars in the night sky of the Southern Hemisphere.
